Frit Tests for Glass Compatibility |
| FRITS | There were 3 frits where 2 different source bags were available, F2, 3110, and F75. Both sources were tested. The frits tested were from Ferro (3292, 3124, 3278, 3134, 3293, 3110, and 3269), and Fusion (F2, F12, and F75). The approximate size of the buttons on all test pieces (post firing) is approximately 1 cm diameter. All clay based tests were conducted on Tuckers Mid Smooth Stone clay, 4 - 6 mm thickness, bisqued to cone 06. Glass is tinted float glass, single layer, 4 mm thickness. | |
| 700 C | This test was conducted on bisque fired cone 6 stoneware. These two tests were fired flat on the shelf. |

800 C |
This test was conducted on both bisque fired cone 6 stoneware and single thickness tinted float glass. The two images of the float glass are of the same piece with different lighting conditions to show the opacity, translucency, or transparency of the various frits on this glass. None of the frits showed any movement in this test. this piece of bisque was fired standing up in order to show movement if the frit melted sufficiently to flow. |

| 850 C | As with the 800 C test, this was also conducted on both bisque and tinted glass. |

| Cone 06 | This test was conducted on bisque fired cone 6 stoneware. At this temperature, frits 5 to 7 inclusive and 13 appeared to show some movement/flow as these tiles were fired standing upright |
Cone 7 |
This test was conducted on bisque fired cone 6 stoneware. Many of the frit buttons showed an area of shine around the button. It is expected that this indicates either migration of solubles from the frit through the bisque prior to firing or more likely "spray/fuming" of a component of the frit during firing. The frit with the least surrounding shiny area is frit 1 as can be seen by the amount of marker remaining to stain the underlying clay. This test was fired flat on the shelf. |
